Michelle has enjoyed a career in the private and public sector over 35 years. As a senior executive and leader in the Australian Public Service (APS), Michelle has coached dozens of people both within her own department and externally.

Michelle has extensive experience in managing teams, including large virtual teams in geographically dispersed service delivery networks.

Michelle was a Disability Champion and Diversity Champion in two large government agencies. She has a deep understanding of people issues, including employee engagement, talent management, reward and recognition, diversity, recruitment and leadership.

 

Business Background and Experience

 

Michelle's public sector career spanned nearly 30 years in the Commonwealth government (APS) and comprised service delivery, program management, policy and corporate roles. Fifteen of those years were spent in the Senior Executive Service (SES) with the last five years up to December 2015 as an SES Band 2 officer.

Michelle is passionate about managing people well to create and nurture high performing teams, with significant experience in developing and implementing creative people solutions to enhance employee engagement.

As the department's Diversity Champion, Michelle established and supported a range of employee networks, focusing on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, people with disability, women and the LGBTIQ community.

Some of the recent roles which Michelle undertook in the APS included:

  • Group Manager, People, Communication and Legal Group, Department of Education and Training
  • Co-chair, Machinery of Government (MOG) Taskforce to implement administrative changes to the then Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations
  • Group Manager, State and Regional Services Strategy Group (with around 800 staff)
  • Group Manager, People Capability Division, Department of Human Services
  • National Manager, Centrelink Call Operations (with 25 direct reports and around 4,500 staff located throughout Australia)
  • National Manager, Employment Services, Centrelink

Michelle provides coaching services which are driven by compassion, humanity, empathy, equity and respect.
She has a lived experience of success, working at very senior roles in the APS, through diversity, loss, disability and courage.
