A Guideline for Organisational Coaching in Australia

In 2008, 20 key industry stakeholders from relevant Australian organisations completed a questionnaire to assist Standards Australia to make a decision regarding the net benefit of producing a handbook on organisational coaching. This group went on to form a working committee with the aim of eventually developing government-recognised standards for organisational coaching. Well, that group’s work is now done, and The Professional Coaching Guidelines for Australia has been published, a first in the world.

The guideline developed for coaching with Standards Australia is somewhat unusual among standards documents in that it has been conceived and developed at a time when professional practice among coaches is still undergoing significant change due to the emergent nature of the field. As coaching draws upon knowledge from multiple disciplines (including psychology, business and education) it does not seek to claim any one distinct body of professional knowledge as its base. It is partly due to this flexibility that coaching as a practice is thought to benefit from the introduction of the standards guideline.
